Becoming a Real Estate Agent: Finding Clients

It is always scary when you start a new career, no matter how old you are. However, it can be even harder as a real estate agent because it is up to you to make your new business a success. It can be challenging to find new real estate clients, especially when you are first starting out!

Here are some ways to find real estate clients, even when you are new at the business.

Specialize in certain types of homes. You are less likely to get overwhelmed if you are only looking to sell certain types of homes. Because of this, you will already know what types of people that you should be trying to reach, making your marketing a little easier.

Start with your family and friends. The easiest way to get new clients is by working with people that you know so always start with your family and friends. Then, if no one is interested or thinking about it, you might want to think about people who you come in contact with on a regular basis. What about your dry cleaner, hairdresser, and assistants at the doctor’s office? Anyone else that you can think of?

Always remember that everyone that you meet is a potential client. In a daily basis, you are likely to meet many people. Several of them may be in the market to buy their first home, while plenty of others may have been thinking about selling for a few months and they just haven’t started yet.

Network with other business professionals (as well as other real estate agents). You never know who needs help. Maybe a local plumber does a job and hears that they are thinking about selling. The same for many other professionals. Maybe another agent may be too busy and need a little help. This is a two-way street! If you sell a home that needs some work, you already know some local professionals to call.

Always have business cards ready. It is important that you always have business cards ready to pass out. Give them to anyone who might be interested or even to those who say that they may know someone who needs a real estate agent.

When possible, get email addresses in order to stay in touch with potential clients. Email marketing is a very powerful form of marketing so you really need to get as many addresses as possible. Then, send emails regularly (but not too frequently) in order for your clients to remember you.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Too many new real estate agents struggle to find their first clients because they are too nervous. They don’t really feel like they have much to offer so it can be hard to market yourself if you are unsure about what you are doing. For this reason, make sure that you are well-educated about the career you are starting in. Then, get helps when needed.

Once you have a few success stories, ask for referrals (and don’t forget to reward them)! Word-of-mouth advertising is one of the most powerful forms of advertising. Not only are people more likely to work with people that they know and trust, this form of advertising is free!

The scariest part of a career in real estate is getting started and finding new clients. However, it is not as hard as you think. Make sure that you ask family, friends, and others who you come in contact with. Anyone that you meet is a potential client so always have your business cards to hand out. You may also want to get their email so you can start a list!
