If you have decided selling real estate is the career for you, then you should know the requirements to become a practicing agent. Most people understand that not just anyone can sell houses — it requires a state-sanctioned license supported by the Real Estate Commission and Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Since not everyone meets the requirements to obtain a Florida real estate license, it is important to understand what those qualifications are before getting too far ahead of yourself. Fulfill Basic Age and Education Level Qualifications
To obtain a sales associate license in the state of Florida, you must be 18 years of age or older. As such, you must also have a high school diploma or GED. When you apply for the state approved pre-license course (and ultimately the state exam), you will be asked to provide proof of age and education level. Keep your social security number on hand as well as this required proof of identity is essential for state security and anti-fraud purposes. The only way to be exempt of these requirements is by either completing a four-year degree in real estate, or being an attorney with a current Florida Bar card.
Pass Mandated Real Estate Education Requirements
You must complete a 63-hour Florida Real Estate Commission-approved pre-license education course prior to your state examination. Specialty continuing education courses do not fulfill this requirement even if the hours add up to the required 63. Unfortunately, a significant amount of people are swayed by cheap course rates that claim to meet the legal standards to obtain a real estate license. But most of the times these “establishments” are fraudulent or poor quality scams that take advantage of loopholes in the system. So called “hybrid” courses should be seriously scrutinized before you decide to risk your career and reputation in the industry. Any real estate school that claims you do not have to spend 63 hours in a classroom environment (whether in person or online) should immediately trigger a red flag.
Submit Additional Applications and Background Checks
After successfully passing the pre-license course, you then submit an application to the Division of Real Estate within the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the appropriate $89 fee to access the Pearson VUE testing center and schedule to sit for the state exam. Do not forget to also run a background check with fingerprints from an approved vendor as part of the application process.
